Virginia Tech Quotes vs. Connecticut

Virginia Tech Head Coach Pete Hughes:
“Obviously we just made our lives more difficult in this tournament. None of us are happy with the way we played. We had a great crowd out there tonight and didn’t take advantage of that. Give credit to Connecticut. I think they hit every mistake we threw at them. We left too many guys on base and gave up a couple soft runs and that was the story of the game. ”

On UConn’s pitching:
“Credit them for making pressure pitches in pressure situations. I thought Cross did a great job with his fastball, hitting both sides of the plate. He opened up the plate with his slider and mixed that in situationally. He did a very good job. I thought we had some quality at bats in pressure situations too, we just didn’t get the hits.”

On playing in pressure situations:
“We play in a regional atmosphere every week in the ACC. We’ve played our best baseball of the year in pressure situations in the ACC tournament. I thought our approach was fine, we just got beat.

Tyler Horan:
On leaving men on base:
“We didn’t capitalize when we should have. I feel like we put the barrel on the ball a few times, they just didn’t fall. That’s why we have more games to come so we can put this behind us.”

On coming back tomorrow:
“We have a great team and we’ve been hitting the ball well so it is a shocker. Any team can win at any time so we just have to come back. We can’t let this one get to us even though we lost to one of the lower seeds because we have to come back and play Coastal Carolina tomorrow.”

Andrew Rash:
On leaving men on base:
“We hit three balls hard to right field today, they just didn’t get down and out of here. We didn’t capitalize on a couple other opportunities. We have to come back tomorrow ready to play and I think we will.”

On coming back tomorrow:
“That’s the great thing about baseball, we get to come out tomorrow and play. We’re going to have to wash this as soon as we walk out of this building. When we leave the locker room tonight we have to come out tomorrow and play a really good Coastal Carolina team who is fighting for their season. We have great leadership on this team and I think we’ll be alright. We just have to battle and keep sticking together.”

Joe Mantiply:
On how his arm felt today:
“My arm felt great going into the game. I really think that a couple bad breaks happened and I let my emotions get the best of me and kind of lost my composure a little bit there.”

On what happened on the ball thrown back to him from Morgan that led to a run:

“I took my glove off for a second. It was clearly my fault. No fault on Chad (Morgan) there.”
