Hughes says: “Steve returns as one of the top hitters and offensive performers in the ACC. When you look at on-base percentage, strikeout numbers, batting average and the way he runs the bases, I think he’s in the top three or four guys in the league. He’s also athletic enough to be one of our better defenders in the outfield, and I love him behind the plate. We’re happy that he’s back in our program. He’ll be in the middle of our lineup, he’s going to catch a bunch and he’ll play a bunch in the outfield.”

2009: Became the first Hokie baseball player to be named to an All-ACC team in Tech’s five seasons in the league, earning second team honors as an outfielder following his first season in Blacksburg … Was also named to the University Division All-State Baseball Second Team as chosen by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) … Saw very limited action over the season's final three weeks due to a broken hand … Finished the year with a .406 batting average to win the ACC’s regular season batting title, becoming the first Hokie to hit over .400 over the course of a season since Matt Griswold hit .408 in 1997 … Was hit by 16 pitches, a mark that ranked him 11th nationally in hit by pitches per game … Went 9-for-16 with seven RBIs and his first home run as a Hokie at the Courtyard by Marriott Classic Feb. 20-22 … Was named to the All-Classic team for his efforts … Tallied three RBIs and his second homer in the win over East Tennessee State … Tallied season-highs with four hits and four runs scored in game one at Duke … Hit his third home run in the third Duke game … Picked up five hits, five runs scored and five RBIs in the NC State series … Doubled home a run and scored at JMU … Doubled and scored in game one with Wake Forest … Went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, three runs scored and his fourth home run in game two … Went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI vs. JMU on April 8 … Picked up two hits in game one at Maryland … Had his 24-game hitting streak ended in game two at Maryland while batting from the leadoff spot … Sat out the next two contests with a sore right hand … Picked up five hits and three RBIs over the first two Clemson games before sitting out game three with a sore hand … Went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs, a double and a stolen base against William & Mary … Was hit by two pitches and scored a run at Liberty … Recorded three plate appearances in game one in Miami on April 24 before a fracture was discovered in his right hand … His only action after that was a pinch-running appearance and one inning in center field during the Delaware State doubleheader, and a pinch-hit appearance in the final Virginia game.

Moorpark College: Was selected in the 38th round by the Chicago White Sox in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft in June after playing the 2008 season in Moorpark, Calif. … Played 39 games for Coach Mario Porto, and hit .370 with 10 home runs and 42 runs driven in … Was named first-team all-league and made the All-Southern California team.

2007: Redshirted.

UC Santa Barbara: Spent the 2006 season at UCSB before transferring to Moorpark … Went 8-for-37 with three homers.

High School: Lettered four years for Coach Mike Firenzi at Marin Catholic, where he was a three-time captain … Batted .394 with four homers as a senior and was named first-team all-league … As a junior, he hit .404 with six homers and led the league in doubles, also earning first-team all-league honors … Also lettered three times in both basketball and football … Earned all-state honors at defensive end in football his senior year and finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in sacks.
