Campbell Blanks Hokies
Tech 1-1 after 6-0 loss
February 15, 2003

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell University pitchers Matt Kleweno and Josh Blades combined on a two-hit shutout as the Fighting Camels handed Virginia Tech a 6-0 loss at Taylor Park on Saturday.

Kleweno did most of the work for Campbell (2-3), pitching eight full innings before turning the mound duties over to Blades. Kleweno, a senior left-hander, kept Tech hitters off balance all afternoon, allowing just six base runners - none of whom reached scoring position. Kleweno pitched hitless ball until the fourth inning when Hokie second baseman Marc Tugwell (Springfield, Va.) singled with two outs. Tech's only other hit came on a two-out single by sophomore right fielder Wyatt Toregas (Ashburn, Va.) in the sixth inning. Kleweno (1-0) struck out three batters and walked two. He also hit one Tech batter and saw another batter reach on an error.

Campbell gave Kleweno all the help he would need with a four-run fourth inning off Tech starting pitcher M.J. Hurley (Wilmington, N.C.). CU first baseman Josh Cotton got the Camels on the board with a two-run homer off the Hokies' freshman right-hander. Campbell also got run-scoring singles from right fielder Lonnie Whitehead and center fielder Jeff Blick during the inning.

Blick led CU's 13-hit attack with three hits. He singled and scored in the sixth inning when Campbell closed out its scoring with two more runs.

Tech, now 1-1 on the season, is not scheduled to return to action until Wednesday, Feb. 26, when it is slated to travel to Richmond for a 4 p.m., game with Virginia Commonwealth University.
