Bauder Enjoys Record-Breaking Day
Individual, team records fall in 35-4 win over Georgetown

BETHESDA, Md. - Outfielder Brad Bauder led the way as Virginia Tech posted a record-breaking 35-4 BIG EAST Conference baseball victory over Georgetown at Shirley Povich Field on Sunday.
Bauder, a junior from Ashburn, Va., went 8-for-8 at the plate with four home runs, two singles, a double and a triple. He drove in 14 runs and scored seven, capping his record-breaking performance with a grand slam home run in the eighth inning. The Tech center fielder set new school single-game marks for hits, runs batted in and total bases (23) and tied records for runs scored and home runs. His totals for runs, hits, RBIs and total bases were also records for a BIG EAST Conference game.
Bauder wasn't the only record-setter on the Tech squad. Freshman Wyatt Toregas (Ashburn, Va.), who started the game in right field and moved behind the plate for the final five innings, set Tech and BIG EAST marks for at bats with nine. Toregas had seven hits in the game and tied Tech and BIG EAST records with three doubles.
The Hokies (21-17; 11-6) scored in every inning on the way to setting school single-game marks for hits (37), runs batted in (35), at bats (65) and total bases (68). Tech's team totals for runs, hits, RBIs, at bats and total bases were also records for a BIG EAST game.
Tech first baseman Chris Winterfeldt (Lynchburg, Va.) set the tone for the Hokies when he led off the top of the first inning with a home run. Catcher Jed English (Alexandria, Va.) contributed a three-run homer and Bauder tripled and scored as Tech finished the opening inning with five runs.
Bauder hit three-run homers in both the second and third innings, then added a run-scoring double in the fourth. His two-run homer in the fifth put Tech on top 24-1. Bauder drove in another run with a single in the sixth inning, He singled and scored on a grand slam home run by second baseman Marc Tugwell (Springfield, Va.) in the eighth inning before capping his afternoon with a grand slam of his own later in the same inning.
Tugwell, English and third baseman John West (Thurmont, Md.) also enjoyed big games for the Hokies. Tugwell drove in five runs with three hits, while English had two hits, four runs scored and five runs batted in. West finished the game 5-for-8 with four runs scored and three RBIs. In all, 12 different players contributed hits for the Hokies and 13 players scored at least one run.
Pitcher Joe Saunders started and pitched six innings to pick up his sixth win without a loss. The junior left-hander gave up seven hits, allowed two runs, struck out seven and walked one.
Georgetown (8-38; 2-18) reached Saunders for a run in the bottom of the first inning when designated hitter Mike Green doubled, then scored on a single by third baseman Bill Quinn. Quinn also provided the Hoyas' second run with a solo homer off Saunders in the sixth. A two-run homer by right fielder Robert O'Hare closed out Georgetown's scoring in the bottom of the eighth.
Tech's next game is scheduled for Tuesday night against East Tennessee State in Kingsport, Tenn.
