Chants edge Hokies in extra innings
Cueto homers in 4-3 loss
February 25, 2008
CONWAY, S.C. - Dock Doyle's run-scoring single in the bottom of the 10th inning propelled Coastal Carolina to a 4-3 extra-inning victory over Virginia Tech on Monday afternoon in the IMICHotels.com INN-vational at Coastal's Mason Stadium.
Coastal, now 4-0 on the young season, had been held scoreless for five straight innings before they plated the winning run. The inning started with right fielder Scott Woodward reaching base when he was hit by a pitch from Tech junior reliever Rhett Ballard (High Point, N.C.). It marked the third straight inning that Ballard had hit a batter with a pitch.
Woodward moved to second when pitcher David Anderson's sacrifice bunt turned into an infield single when the Hokies where unable to get an out. Doyle then laced a single to right to provide the Chanticleers with their second straight 4-3 win over the Hokies.
The Hokies, who left runners in scoring position in five of the last six innings, were victims of four double plays and had two runners thrown out at the plate. Tech had a golden opportunity in the ninth, when it had men at first and third with nobody out, but was unable to push a run across.
Anderson moved from first base to the mound for the Chants two batters into the sixth inning. He held Tech scoreless over his five innings of work to earn the win, his first of the season. Ballard, who came in with two runners on and one out in the eight, worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam without allowing a run in the inning.
Tech freshman Jesse Hahn (Groton, Conn.) made his first collegiate start on the mound and held his own over six solid innings of work. He allowed three runs, one of which was unearned, on just five hits.
Woodward got Coastal Carolina on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning, reaching base on a one-out single and stealing second base. After moving to third on a passed ball, Woodward scored on a single by first baseman Anderson.
A pair of doubles helped Tech grab a brief lead in the third inning. A lead-off two-bagger by center fielder Steve Bumbry (Cockeysville, Md.) got the Hokies going. A sacrifice bunt by freshman shortstop Tony Balisteri (Lexington, Va.) moved Bumbry to third. After teammate Sean O'Brien (Chappaqua, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch, freshman left fielder Austin Wates (Richmond, Va.) grounded out, scoring Bumbry from third. Right fielder Jose Cueto (Miami, Fla.) followed with a double to plate O'Brien.
Coastal knotted the score in the bottom of the inning on a single by Woodward. An inning later, a squeeze bunt by Derek Martin scored left fielder Adam Rice for a 3-2 Coastal lead.
Cueto led off the Tech sixth with a home run to left field with nobody aboard to even the count once again. Cueto, O'Brien and catcher Anthony Sosnoskie (Front Royal, Va.) each finished with two hits for the Hokies.
Anderson not only picked up the pitching victory for Coastal, he also went 4-for-5 at the plate.
The Hokies are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Davidson for a 3 p.m., game
