No. 3 Tar Heels pull away from Hokies 11-1
Wates, Sosnoskie lead Tech with two hits each
March 14, 2008
CARY, N.C. - Tim Federowicz drove in six runs to lead No. 3 North Carolina to an 11-1 victory over Virginia Tech in the first game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at the USA Baseball Complex Stadium on Friday.
Federowicz used two doubles, a single and a sacrifice fly to post a career high in runs batted in. He also turned in 1.1 scoreless innings of relief in the game. Federowicz was joined by teammate Tim Fedroff with three hits, as the Tar Heels used a 15-hit attack to improve their record to 12-3 overall and 3-1 in the ACC.
Tech managed just seven hits in the contest, including two each from freshman left fielder Austin Wates (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore catcher Anthony Sosnoskie (Front Royal, Va.). Sosnoskie drove in Tech's lone run of the game as the Hokies fell to 7-9 on the season, including a 0-4 ACC mark.
North Carolina opened the bottom half of the first inning with back-to-back doubles by Fedroff and Ben Bunting to produce a quick run. A groundout, followed by a sacrifice fly by Federowicz put the Tar Heels up 2-0 against Tech starting pitcher Josh Wymer (Fort Worth, Texas).
Federowicz helped UNC add to its lead with a two-run single in the third. A one-out single by Bunting and a double by first baseman Dustin Ackley set the table for the Tar Heels' designated hitter.
North Carolina starting pitcher Adam Warren pitched to the minimum number of batters during the first 4.2 innings, despite giving up a pair of singles to Wates and walking center field Sean Ryan (Ashburn, Va.). Warren picked off Wates both times he reached first and Ryan was thrown out attempting to steal.
Tech got on the board against Warren in the sixth, loading the bases on a fielding error and a pair of walks. With two outs in the inning, Sosnoskie's infield single scored second baseman Matt Hacker (Richmond, Va.) from third. The bases were still loaded, when UNC first baseman Ackley made a leaping stab of a line shot by transfer Klint Reed to end the inning.
Federowicz moved from DH to the mound to replace Warren in the top of the seventh. After pitching a scoreless inning, the junior right-hander smacked a big two-run double in the bottom of the inning.
The Tar Heels tacked on five runs on four hits in the eighth. The inning was highlighted by a two-run homer by Fedroff.
Warren picked up the pitching victory, allowing just four hits and an unearned run over six innings. He improved to 3-0 on the season. Wymer, who also pitched six innings, saw his record evened at 2-2 with the loss.
The Hokies and Tar Heels are scheduled to play game two of their series on Saturday afternoon at 1.
