Freshman Hahn pitches well in loss

CARY, N.C. - North Carolina broke up a pitching duel between two former high school teammates with a four-run seventh inning to defeat Virginia Tech 6-0 on Sunday in the final game of their weekend ACC series at USA Baseball Training Stadium.
The No. 3 ranked Tar Heels (14-3; 5-1) opened the seventh inning with consecutive singles by Ryan Graepel, Ben Bunting and Tim Fedroff to produce the first run of the inning. Following a groundout and an intentional walk to catcher Tim Federowicz, UNC second baseman Kyle Seager delivered a two-run single. A groundout by center fielder Seth Williams brought home the final run.
The first six innings of the game featured a pitching duel between Tech's Jesse Hahn (Groton, Conn.) and UNC's Matt Harvey. The two freshmen right-handers were teammates last season at Fitch High School in Groton.
Hahn pitched well for the Hokies (7-11; 0-6), but was hurt by three costly errors. He pitched into the seventh inning, giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits. He struck out two batters and walked two. Hahn is now 1-2 on the season.
Harvey picked up the victory, his second against one loss. He worked 6.1 scoreless innings allowing four hits. He struck out six batters and did not issue a walk.
Errors on the sunny, windy day played a major roll in the Tar Heels' first two runs. Tech committed a pair of outfield errors in the second inning, one that allowed Seager to reach base and another that brought him home from third base with one out.
An inning later, North Carolina made two quick outs before loading the bases on a single, a base on balls and a Tech fielding error. A walk to Seager forced in the Tar Heels' second run of the game. The score remained 2-0 until the seventh.
Tech's next scheduled game is the Hokies' exhibition game against the New York Yankees on Tuesday at English Field.
