Hokies lose non-conference bout with BC
Waskiewicz, Peeling make debuts in 12-6 loss
March 20, 2008
BLACKSBURG, Va. - A four-run first inning gave Boston College a lead it would never relinquish, eventually pushing the visiting Eagles to a 12-6 win over Virginia Tech at English Field on Thursday afternoon at English Field.
Though the Eagles (9-8, 2-4 ACC) and the Hokies (7-12, 0-6 ACC) are league foes, this game was played as a non-conference match-up since the two teams aren't scheduled to meet in league play this season. BC was in the area to play Virginia in a three-game set this weekend.
Redshirt sophomore Rob Waskiewicz (Manchester, Md.), who saw the first live action of his career on Tuesday in the Yankees' exhibition, made his official collegiate debut by getting the starting nod and throwing five innings. He got touched for four runs in the first inning, but settled down and tossed the next four frames scoreless. Waskiewicz finished with eight hits allowed, two walks and five strikeouts.
Another Hokie pitcher, freshman Jake Peeling (Waynesboro, Va.), made his Tech debut as well, tossing one inning in relief, giving up three runs (one earned) on one hit and three walks. Kevin Moran (1-0) earned the win for BC on the mound, while Chris Kowalski pitched the last three innings to record his second save.
Klint Reed (Chesterfield, Va.), Sean Ryan (Ashubrn, Va.) and Matt Hacker (Richmond, Va.) each collected two hits for Tech, and Jose Cueto (Miami, Fla.) blasted his second home run of the season.
BC wasted no time getting things started, as right fielder Barry Butera led off the game with his fifth home run of the season. A Matt Hamlet single, an Eric Campbell walk and a Mickey Wiswall base knock loaded the bases for Michael Belfiore, who delivered an RBI single to make it 2-0. Shortstop Garret Smith finished off the scoring in the inning for BC, bringing home Campbell and Wiswall with a two-run base hit.
Tech also managed to load the bases in its half of the inning, but came away with just one run. A one-out walk to Reed and a two-out double by catcher Anthony Sosnoskie (Front Royal, Va.) put runners at second and third. BC's Moran then issued his second walk of the inning - this time to Cueto - to fill the sacks. That paved the way for Reed to score on a passed ball.
An RBI-double by Hacker in the bottom of the second shaved the Eagles' lead to 4-2. Hacker's two-bagger followed a lead-off walk to Ryan.
The Hokies continued the trend in the third, picking up another run, this time on a sacrifice fly by Cueto. Reed set the table for the senior outfielder when he singled, moved to second on a walk first baseman Sean O'Brien (Chappaqua, N.Y) and advanced to third when Sosnoskie flew out to right field.
Boston College took advantage of a Tech error to post a pair of unearned runs in the top of the sixth. Second baseman Matt Hamlet's fourth hit of the game, a two-run double, pushed the visitor's lead back to three runs at 6-3.
Tech matched the Eagles with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Cueto led off the frame with a solo homer down the left field line, his second round-tripper of the year. Designated hitter Matt Blow (Richmond, Va.) followed with a walk. A wild pitch moved Blow to second and a single by Ryan advanced him to third. Hacker then brought him home with a sac fly to center.
Smith provided his third RBI of the game for Boston College in the seventh inning, driving a double to center to score Belfiore all the way from first. An inning later, both teams took advantage of errors to add runs. BC picked up a pair of runs on two Hokie fielding mistakes, while Tech scored one run on an Eagle miscue.
The Eagles' Wiswall launched a three-run homer in the ninth to close out the scoring and cement the victory for Boston College.
The Hokies are scheduled for a three-game series with Florida State this weekend at English Field. First pitch on Friday and Saturday is set for 5:30 p.m., with Sunday's contest slated to begin at 1 p.m.
