Hokies downed 10-1 by Virginia
Cueto ties record with two triples
March 28, 2008
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia starting pitcher Jacob Thompson slowed down a Virginia Tech offense that had scored 31 runs in its last three contests by throwing a complete game and leading the Cavaliers to a 10-1 victory over the Hokies on Friday night at Davenport Field.
Thompson (4-0) helped lift Virginia's record to 21-5, 6-4 ACC by allowing just seven hits while striking out five and walking none. Six of the Cavaliers' runs came from base runners who had reached by a walk or a hit by pitch, though Virginia also tallied 10 hits in the game.
Starter Josh Wymer (2-4, Fort Worth, Texas) took the loss for Virginia Tech (8-16, 0-10 ACC). He cut down on his hits allowed totals from recent games and gave up just five, but five walks led to seven runs (six earned). For the Hokie offense, left fielder Jose Cueto (Miami, Fla.) tied an ACC single game record by recording two triples.
The Cavaliers started scoring early when they got a solo home run off the bat of David Adams to pick up a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Adams served as the catalyst for Virginia's run in the third inning as well, drawing a walk before stealing second and then moving to third after enticing Wymer into an errant pickoff attempt. He came home to score on a single by Jeremy Farrell.
The Hokies got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the fourth when shortstop Ty Hohman (Tomball, Texas) doubled to center, moved to third on a wild pitch by Thompson, and touched home on a fielder's choice from catcher Anthony Sosnoskie (Front Royal, Va).
Virginia answered in the fourth with two runs - one by Jarrett Parker on a Tyler Cannon single and one by Greg Miclat on a balk - to take a 4-1 lead. The Cavaliers then pulled away with three more runs in the fifth thanks to an RBI triple by Farrell, an RBI single by David Coleman and a sac fly by Miclat.
UVa added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh when Parker doubled home Franco Valdes and Coleman. J.C. Poma tacked on an RBI single in the eighth.
The Hokies and Cavaliers are scheduled to resume the series on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be televised by RSN (Comcast SportsNet, FOX Sports Net South, FOX Sports Florida & New England Sports Network).
