UVa's second consecutive complete game drops Hokies 9-2
Reed goes 3-for-4 for Tech
March 29, 2008
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - For the second game in a row, the Virginia Tech Hokies were on the wrong end of complete game effort by a Virginia Cavalier pitcher, falling 9-2 in ACC baseball action at Davenport Field on Saturday.
One day after Jacob Thompson went the distance for Virginia, left-hander Pat McAnaney tossed all nine innings - striking out a career-high 13 Hokies in the process - to improve to 3-1 and move the Cavaliers to 22-5, 7-4 ACC.
Tech (8-17, 0-11 ACC) also got some quality pitching as four Hokies combined to walk just two batters. Only three of Virginia's nine runs were earned, as Tech committed five errors in the field. Redshirt senior David Cross (Scottsdale, Ariz.) took the loss for Tech to drop to 2-1.
Three consecutive hits in the bottom of the first got Virginia out to a 2-0 lead. After David Adams singled, Dan Grovatt drove him in with a double down the left field line, and Jeremy Farrell followed with a single to plate Grovatt.
Two Virginia Tech errors led to four unearned runs in the second for UVa. Tyler Cannon and Adams each delivered sacrifice flies to score Tyler Biddix and Jarrett Parker, respectively. Greg Miclat then scored on Grovatt's second RBI double in as many at bats, and David Coleman capped the frame by singling home Grovatt.
The Hokies got on the board with one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings, and the first one came with third baseman Michael Seaborn (Atlanta, Ga.) on third and center fielder Sean Ryan (Ashburn, Va.) on first. Ryan attempted to steal second and was thrown out, but the throw allowed Seaborn to race home. Tech's second run came from first baseman Sean O'Brien (Chappaqua, N.Y.), who walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a balk, and scored an RBI groundout by catcher Anthony Sosnoskie (Front Royal, Va.).
Errors once again came back to bite the Hokies in the bottom of the sixth, as UVa tacked on another pair of unearned runs to go up 8-2. With the bases loaded and no outs, Farrell lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Cannon, and Coleman followed that with an RBI groundout to score Adams. Cannon scored again in the eighth on a Farrell single to set the final score.
The Hokies and Cavaliers are scheduled to finish their three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
