Hokies drop series finale to Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Virginia Tech was held to just a sole run in the final game of the three-game series at Alex Rodriguez Park on Sunday afternoon as Miami took the ACC contest, 11-1.

Michael Seaborn went 3-for-4 with a double and scored the lone Hokie run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Tim Smalling. With the loss, Tech is now 10-7, 0-3 ACC, while Miami evens its record at 8-8, 3-0 ACC.

The Hurricanes put two runs on the board in the second on a two-RBI single by Harold Martinez. They added a third run in the third on a Chantz Mack ground out.

Miami broke the game open in the sixth, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs. Walks hurt Tech in the game as the staff issued 10 free passes and six of them crossed the plate.

The Hokies used six pitchers in the contest, with Joe Parsons (3-1) suffering his first defeat. Eric Whaley (3-1) went seven frames for Miami and struck out eight in a winning effort.

Of note, Johnny Morales’ streak of reaching base in each of the Hokies games this season ended at 16 straight. Meanwhile, Smalling and Andrew Rash extended theirs, which now stand at 15 and 14 games respectively.a

Tech will now return to Blacksburg for five straight games starting with a pair of midweek games (Tuesday and Wednesday) against Hartford, first pitch for both is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., before welcoming North Carolina for its first ACC home weekend to English Field beginning Friday at 5:30 p.m.
