UNC (32-2, 13-2 ACC) used a six-run first and an eight-run fourth to build a 10-run advantage and gave its starter Kent Emanuel plenty of run support as he improved to 7-1 on the season.
Tech (22-13, 7-9 ACC) answered the Tar Heels’ first with four runs of its own and trailed just 7-5 after the first three innings. Brad Markey took the loss for the Hokies and is now 3-3.
The Hokies scored eight runs off of Emanuel, who had come into the night with just 10 runs allowed in his first eight starts (62.1 innings).
Five different Tech players had a pair of hits in the game, with Gary Schneider’s two RBI and two runs scored leading the way. He hit a two-run home run in the eighth, while Kyle Wernicki also had a pair of RBI for the Hokies on a single in the first.
UNC was led by Brian Holberton’s four hits and five runs scored, Colin Moran’s four RBI and three runs scored, and Chaz Frank’s four hits and four RBI.
The two teams will play the second game of the three-game conference series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
