The weekend series:
Tech continues its 121st season of baseball by heading Atlanta, Ga., to face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The last time the two Techs faced off was for a chance to go to the 2013 ACC Baseball Championship game and the Hokies won it with Kyle Wernicki scoring the game winner in the seventh in a 3-2 victory. As members of the conference, the Hokies are 5-10 all-time at Georgia Tech, but
won a series there in both 2007 and 2010.
Heading to the Peach State: During the 2013 season, the Hokies did not play one single contest in the state of Georgia. However, back in 2012, they had seven games in the Peach State, which included a 3-1 stretch at the Kennesaw State Tournament that opened up the season - they faced both the host Owls and Bradley twice. Tech also went 1-2 at Georgia Tech that year.
Interestingly, the Kennesaw games marked the first ones in the Peach State against teams not named Georgia Tech since the 2005 campaign, when the Hokies played a tournament at Savannah State against the Tigers, Navy and Villanova. That invitational marked the first games the Hokies played in Georgia since 1997.
Zagunis’ career numbers are climbing: Entering the weekend, junior Mark Zagunis has compiled 199 career hits, one shy of becoming just the seventh Hokie to reach the 200-hit milestone as a junior.
The last Tech player to reach 200 before his senior year was Ronnie Shaban, who notched career hit No. 200 on May 19, 2011.
Also, entering the week, Zagunis ranked in the top five in the ACC in eight career categories (among active players - min. 250 ABs). Those include second in hits per game (1.28), third in batting average (.336), runs scored (135), total bases per game (1.89) and stolen bases (50), fourth in runs per game (0.87), and fifth in slugging percentage (.494) and stolen base percentage (.806).
