“Jim Druckenmiller has engineered the greatest comeback I’ve ever seen!”

In 1995, Virginia Tech had to beat 13th-ranked Virginia in Charlottesville to earn a bid to the Sugar Bowl. The Hokies trailed 29-14 entering the fourth quarter, but led by quarterback Jim Druckenmiller, rallied to win in the final minutes. Druckenmiller threw two fourth quarter touchdown passes to Jermaine Holmes, including the game winner with just 47-seconds left in the game. Tech won 36-29, finishing its season with nine straight wins.

“It's a miracle in Blacksburg! Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!”

Perhaps the most dramatic finish in Lane Stadium history. The Hokies Tyrod Taylor threw a game-winning touchdown pass to Dyrell Roberts in the final seconds to give Tech an improbable 16-15 win over Nebraska. The Hokies trailed the Cornhuskers 15-10 with just 1:44 remaining in the game when they got the ball on their own 12-yard line. With no time outs remaining, the Hokies drove 88 yards in five plays for the game winning score. Taylor’s 81-yard pass to Danny Coale brought the ball to the Nebraska 3-yard line. Three plays later, Taylor scrambled, and as Husker’s defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh grabbed his jersey, he fired the game winning pass to Roberts.

“Shayne Graham wins it for Virginia Tech!”

The Hokies kept their national championship hopes alive with a dramatic 22-20 win at West Virginia.

Tech had taken a 19-7 lead with 5:00 remaining in the fourth quarter, but WVU rallied to score a pair of touchdowns to take a 20-19 lead with just over 1:00 to play. But Graham nailed a 44-yard field goal as time expired giving the Hokies one of the most dramatic wins in school history. Tech improved to 8-0 with the win, and would finish the regular season undefeated.

“He ran it back … he ran it back for a touchdown!”

This was a dream for Tech fans and one of the most remarkable plays in school history. The Hokies scored on the final play of the game, in Charlottesville, to beat 13th ranked UVA 36-29. Antonio Banks intercepted quarterback Mike Groh on the final pay to seal the win, that culminated a 22-point comeback that earned Tech a Sugar Bowl bid. But that’s just part of the story. As Banks was racing down the UVa sidelines after the interception, two things happened. First, then-UVA trainer Joe Geick stuck his foot onto the field as if to trip Banks as he ran by the UVA bench. (Geick was subsequently suspended for UVa’s Bowl Game) Secondly, Tech fans stormed the field from the opposite endzone and swamped Banks in the end zone to end the game. It was a bizarre ending to an incredible game.

“Give it to me Roscoe, Give it to me!”

Miami had won 39 straight regular season games when it visited Lane Stadium in 2003. Tech took the early lead when cornerback DeAngelo Hall stripped the ball from Miami’s Roscoe Parrish and returned it for a touchdown. Tech would beat the No. 2 Hurricanes 31-7.

Keion’s 100-yard interception return beats Miami at the Orange Bowl
Date: November 16, 1996
Site: Orange Bowl, Miami, Fla.
The University of Miami had not lost a BIG EAST game at the Orange Bowl until the Hokies 21-7 win over the Hurricanes in 1996. The ‘Canes had won an NCAA record 58-straight home games before losing to Washington, but had never lost a conference home game. Late in the fourth quarter, the Hokies led 14-7, but Miami had driven to Tech’s 14 yard line with just 1:54 to play. That’s when Keion Carpenter, a Tech safety from Baltimore, intercepted a pass in the west end zone at the Orange Bowl, and sprinted 100-yards for the score.

André Davis – “The hottest man in America!”
Date: October 12, 2000
Site: Lane Stadium, Blacksburg, Va.
Years later, this is still one of the most amazing performances most have ever seen. The Hokies’ André Davis scored three touchdowns on three touches during the Hokies’ 48-20 win over WVU. The third score, a punt return, included Wayne Ward’s punishing block of a WVU special teams player. Tech and Davis turned a 14-14 tie into a 34-14 lead in just over six minutes of play.

Corey Moore. “Hat Trick…unassisted!”

Site: Lane Stadium, Blacksburg, Va.
Tech all-American defensive end Corey Moore pulled off a ‘hat trick’ during the Hokies’ 31-11 win over Clemson in 1999. Moore had a sack, a forced fumble, and a touchdown on the same play during the Hokies’ win over the Tigers on a crazy Thursday night at Lane Stadium.

Logan Thomas’ 5 TD game beats Miami
Date: October 8, 2011
Site: Lane Stadium, Blacksburg, Va.
Hokies quarterback Logan Thomas threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more, including the game winner with 0:56 remaining in the game to give the Hokies a 38-35 win over Miami. Trailing 35-31, and facing fourth down from the Miami 19-yard line, Thomas faked the handoff, and sprinted 19-yards for the game winning score.

David Wilson – “A vapor trail down the sidelines. This place is going crazy”
Date: November 4, 2010
Site: Lane Stadium, Blacksburg, Va.
The Hokies had come back from a 14-0 deficit and were tied 21-21 with Georgia Tech late in the fourth quarter when David Wilson returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Wilson’s score, with 2:23 remaining, gave the Hokies a 28-21 win.

Eric Green’s pick-six takes down the ’Canes

Miami had won 39 straight regular season games when it visited Lane Stadium in 2003. In fact, the Hurricanes had never lost a regular season game under coach Larry Coker. But Tech won this night 31-7 thanks to the heroics of Eric Green who returned a Brock Berlin pass for a touchdown early in the second quarter.

The X-man sends the Hokies to the Orange Bowl
Date: December 1, 2007
Site: Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, Jacksonville, Fla.
Tech led Boston College 23-16 in the final minutes of the ACC Championship game, but the Eagles and quarterback Matt Ryan were on the move. Ryan, who had led BC to a 14-10 comeback win at Lane Stadium earlier in the season, had his BC team driving again in the final minutes when Tech’s Xavier Adibi intercepted a pass, and returned it for a score. The play gave the Hokies the 2007 ACC title, an Orange Bowl bid, and a sweet win over Ryan and BC.

Macho, Macho Man

The Hokies trailed Cincinnati 13-12 entering the fourth quarter, but rallied to win the game to remain undefeated. Macho Harris’ interception return for a score – followed by Mike Burnop’s singing -- was the key play in the second half.

Michael Vick TD ends Carrier Dome woes

Virginia Tech had never won at the Carrier Dome until a dramatic Saturday night in 2000. Tech was ranked No. 2 in the nation, but fell behind 14-0. The Hokies, led by Vick and a stifling defense, rallied to win 22-14. Vick’s game-clinching run came with just 1:34 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Virginia Tech defeated Nebraska 16-15 during the 2009 season, and while the game had an incredible finish, Ryan William’s first-half run against the Cornhuskers was one of the most remarkable of his career. Mike Burnop’s analysis was just as memorable.

Bryan Still’s sweet night vs. Texas

Tech trailed Texas 10-0 late in the second quarter when Bryan Still returned a Longhorn punt 60-yards for a touchdown. The Hokies would roar back for a 28-10 win over Texas to win their first-ever Sugar Bowl.

Vince Fuller helps sink WVU

The Hokies defeated sixth-ranked and undefeated West Virginia 19-13 at Lane Stadium. The key play in the game occurred when Jim Davis blocked a WVU field goal attempt. Vince Fuller picked up the football and raced the length of the field for what turned out to be the decisive touchdown.

Randall to Royal 80-yard TD sparks Atlanta rally
Date: October 28, 2004
Site: Bobby Dodd Stadium, Atlanta, Ga.
The Hokies scored three touchdown in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to stun Georgia Tech 34-20 in Atlanta. With 5:28 remaining in the game, the Hokies trailed 20-12. Bryan Randal’s 80-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Royal started the Hokies’ amazing late-game comeback.

Undefeated Tech trailed West Virginia 20-19 in the final minutes in Morgantown, when quarterback Michael Vick pulled off an improbable run. Tech had no timeouts remaining and Vick appeared to be heading out of bounds in front of Tech’s bench. Instead, Vick exploded ahead for a long run that put the Hokies in position to attempt the game-winning field goal.

Tyrod Taylor to Danny Coale

Tech trailed Nebraska late in the fourth quarter. With less than two minutes to play, Tyrod Taylor completed an 81-yard bomb to receiver Danny Coale. The play moved the ball to the Nebraska three yard line, setting the Hokies up for a dramatic finish a few moments later.

Tech needed to beat Boston College to finish an undefeated regular season in 1999. Early in the 2nd quarter, the Hokies started a drive on their own 31-yard line. That’s when Vick and Davis combined on a spectacular touchdown that sent Lane Stadium into a frenzy.

Hokies beat No. 9 WVU
Date: October 7, 1989

The Hokies defeated 9th-ranked West Virginia on the road thanks to four field goals by Mickey Thomas, and a stifling defense that held WVU’s high-powered attack, led by quarterback Major Harris, to just 185 yards of total offense. It was Tech’s first win in Morgantown since 1967.

ENDOWMENT

The athletics department also is establishing an endowment in the name of Burnop's wife, Ellen, and Roth's sister, Lynda, both of whom passed away from lung cancer this summer. Anyone who makes a contribution of at least $25 to this endowment will receive a commemorative print. The endowment will fund a scholarship in their names.
