September 9, 2000
WINSCHOTEN, Netherlands -- Ultra-distance runner and ex-Hokie Howard Nippert finished in 24th place at the 100 kilometer world championships in Winschoten, Netherlands on Saturday. The 100k national champion was the second American to finish out of the 47 runners who survived to the end.
Nippert's time of 7:04.05 was three minutes slower than his winning time at nationals in March. Pascal Fetizon of France was the winner with a time of 6:23.13 and Dan Held was the top American, taking fourth in 6:33:09.
The former Tech cross country and track star had figured to do better in the 62-plus mile test, but still managed a formidable showing with a top 25 spot.
