Seaton remains undefeated in 1999 with a near-record time.
October 2, 1999

ATHENS, Ohio -- The Virginia Tech men's cross country team left no doubt that they were the best team at the McDonalds Invitational on Saturday as the Hokies placed four runners in the top five to claim the title. The Tech women finished third at the meet hosted by Ohio University.

The men scored just 31 points in the seven team meet which was 44 points better than runner-up Wright State. As for the women, Akron University took home the team title with 51 points, while Tech came in with 81.

Chris Seaton (Richmond, Va.) kept his undefeated season in tact and once again led the Hokies to victory. Seaton destroyed the entire field, winning by a margin of 37 seconds. He missed the coarse reco rd by just three seconds with a personal record of 24:55.

Freshman Kevin Rhue (Virginia Beach, Va.) had a break-through performance, running 25:33 to finish in third, just one tick behind second-place. The meet was a homecoming for fourth-place Van Arnold (Lowell, Ohio). The Tech senior lives just a few miles from the course. Paul Hayes (Dillsburg, Pa.) rounded out the top five with a 25:45 showing which w as four seconds behind Arnold.

"They showed very good poise and very good experience," said men's coach Steve Taylor. "These guys responded well and got out hard. To have four guys in the top five is really great."

Johanna Stumpf (Stafford, Va.) continued her strong final season. The senior ran a personal best of 18:09 which was good for fifth-place. Freshman Stacey Vidt (Allison Park, Pa.) stayed true to form as the Hokies' top freshman. She placed 15th with an 18:30.

Kristen Fryburg from Miami of Ohio took home first-place with a time of 17:35

"I thought we had an opportunity to win the whole thing, but all in all the girls ran well," said women's coach Lori Taylor. "We were, however, a little off at the beginning and had a slow start."

The Hokies are off next weekend, but return to action October 16 when they head across the country for the California Poly State University Invitational. The meet is held in San Luis Obispo, Calif. and should give Tech the opportunity to face some top sch ools.
