Two Hokies finish in the top-ten

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech had five runners compete in the Virginia Tech Invitational today at the Tech cross country course.
Freshman Jessica Erickson (Herndon, Va.) took fifth place in the women's 4.7k race with 18:37.39 and sophomore Kelly Dick (Burke, Va.) finished in 8th place.
The winner of the women's race is former Hokie runner, Marlies Overbeeke. She clocked a time of 16:65.64 and was about a minute faster than the runner-up, Cynthia Campbell. Overbeeke closed out her two-year career last May as the Hokies' first woman cross country NCAA All-American last year.
Freshman Matt McGroarty (Linwood, N.J.) was the first Hokie to cross the finish line in the men's 7.8k race. He finished in 18th place with a time of 26:11.63. Sophomores Brian Markley (Lovettsville, Va.) and Chris Scott (Virginia Beach, Va.) were 20th and 30th.
Tech did not run a full team in the men's and women's races so they were not included into the team scoring.
West Virginia Wesleyan College women's squad and the University of Tennessee's men's team took top team honors at this year's invitational.
West Virginia Wesleyan won the women's team scoring with 30 points. Hannah Kovarik (WVa. Wesleyan) was the top female collegiate finisher and third place overall in the 4.7k race with a time of 18:29.95.
University of Charleston edged out Radford University for second place. Charleston had 56 points while Radford grabbed third place with 58 points.
Lynchburg College and Concord University took fourth and fifth places, respectively.
On the men's side, Tennessee won with 21 points and dominated with six top-ten finishers. Volunteer Dusty Miller was the individual winner of the 7.8k race in a time of 24.38.40.
Radford placed second with 74 points and Concord was third with 81 points. Chris Snell of Concord was the men's runner-up with a time of 24:40.60.
Lynchburg finished in fourth place with 86 points while West Virginia Wesleyan took fifth place with 105 points. Charleston had 165 points for sixth place.
Next up for the Hokies is the Chili Pepper Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas on Saturday, Oct. 16.
