Cross country impresses at Colonial Inter-Regional Challenge
Women place second, men take fourth

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Junior Natalie Sherbak led a foursome of Hokies in the top 10 at the William & Mary Colonial Inter-Regional Challenge Saturday morning as the Virginia Tech women's cross country team took home a second place finish. Meanwhile, junior Andrew Montgomery led the men's team to a fourth-place finish, placing eighth overall as part of a Tech trio in the top 15.
The women garnered 55 points, just 12 points behind meet winner and No. 21-ranked Georgetown. Sherbak finished the 6k course in a time of 21:46 to pace the squad, while freshman Fiona Gentles took fourth place in 21:55. Sisters Tasmin (22:19) and Jessica Fanning (22:23) came through the chute in ninth and tenth, respectively. Rounding out the scoring for Tech was freshman Lisa MacPherson in 30th place.
The host Tribe placed third among the women's teams with 73 points. Rounding out the field were Maryland, LaSalle, George Washington, Hampton and Fordham, in that order. The individual crown went to the Hoyas' Elizabeth Maloy.
In the men's 8k race, the Hokies totaled 91 points to better ACC-foe Maryland, East Tennessee State, Fordham, the Virginia "B" squad, George Washington and Hampton. Twenty second-ranked William & Mary claimed the top spot with 30 points behind first-place finisher Christo Landry, while 14th-ranked Georgetown took second and LaSalle place third.
Montgomery crossed the finish line in 24:53, with sophomore Paul LaPenna not far behind in tenth (24:56). Freshman Devin Cornwall continued a solid start to his career as he placed 15th in a time of 25:07. Other top Hokie finishers included sophomore Jason Vick in 29th; and juniors Billy Berlin and Zach Thomas in 31st and 32nd place, respectively.
Virginia Tech's next competition will be held October 14 in Fayetteville, Ark., at the Chili Pepper Invitational.
