January 11, 2001

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Six home games, including BIG EAST Conference contests against Miami, Syracuse and Boston College, highlight Virginia Tech's 2001 football schedule, which was released Thursday by Tech Director of Athletics Jim Weaver.

The Hokies will play a home game in December for the first time in school history when they face defending BIG EAST champion Miami at Lane Stadium/Worsham Field on Dec. 1. The game will be televised nationally by ABC. The only other time Tech has played a regular-season football game during the month of December at any site was in 1950 when it traveled to the University of Maryland for a game on Dec. 2.

Joining the BIG EAST foes on the home schedule are non-conference opponents Connecticut, Western Michigan and UCF. The Hokies will be meeting Connecticut and Western Michigan for the first time in football.

The Hokies' 2001 road schedule is a challenging one that includes BIG EAST showdowns at West Virginia and Pittsburgh, along with the battle for the Commonwealth Cup against in-state rival Virginia. Tech is also scheduled to play league games at Temple and Rutgers.

Tech, which is coming off a 41-20 victory over Clemson in the Gator Bowl and its second consecutive 11-1 season, has open dates scheduled before its trip to Rutgers and prior to its home games with Syracuse and Miami.

Times and information on additional television games will not be available until a later date. The complete schedule is available here.
