Winner to be announced Tuesday night in Richmond
December 3, 2001

Virginia Tech linebacker Ben Taylor, William and Mary quarterback David Corley and Virginia receiver Billy McMullen and are the finalists for the 2001 Dudley Award, as announced Monday.

The Dudley Award is named after former Virginia standout "Bullet" Bill Dudley. It symbolizes the player of the year in state college football. Sponsored by The Downtown Club, it will be presented at a banquet Tuesday night. The banquet, at The Downtown Club, will follow the 7 o'clock presentation of the award.

Each football-playing school is allowed to nominate one player. The nominees are then voted on by a panel of 15 sports writers and broadcasters from around the state. The three highest vote-getters are invited to the banquet as Dudley finalists.

Taylor, a senior from Bellaire, Ohio, had 116 tackles for the Hokies during the regular season. He had 17.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, including 4.5 sacks. Taylor recovered two fumbles in Tech's 26-24 setback to top-ranked Miami on Saturday. He was a semifinalist for the Butkus Award for the second straight year.

Corley, a junior from Columbia, S.C., already is William and Mary's all-time leader in total offense, and he is within 1,067 yards of becoming the school's all-time passing leader. He has 7,183 career years. In 12 games this season, including a playoff appearance, Corley threw for 2,808 yards and 21 touchdowns. He completed 75.7 percent of his passes.

McMullen, a junior from Richmond, finished the regular season with 83 catches for 1,060 yards and 12 touchdowns. He topped the previous Virginia single-season record by 29 catches and came within five of the Atlantic Coast Conference record. More than half his catches went for a touchdown or a first down.

All three finalists are expected to be in attendance, along with their respective head coaches.

The Dudley Award banquet is open to the public. Tickets are available and can be purchased by calling The Downtown Club at (804) 644-4051.
