2002 Football Schedule Information
January 4, 2002

BLACKSBURG - The 2002 Virginia Tech football schedule will be released by the end of January, BIG EAST Conference officials said Friday. Last year, the schedule was released on Jan. 11, but that may not necessarily be true this year.

In past years, the schedule was released later, but with the new ABC deal, the schedule is required to be completed in January.

While tentative dates for non-conference games have been set, the BIG EAST is in the process of finalizing the conference dates. Tech is scheduled to host non-conference contests with Louisiana State, Marshall and Virginia, as well as BIG EAST games with Rutgers, Temple, Pittsburgh and West Virginia. The Hokies are slated to take on Western Michigan, Texas A&M, Boston College, Syracuse and Miami on the road.

The 2002 schedule could be one of the toughest in the nation as the Hokies will play seven teams that not only participated in bowls, but were victorious. That includes national champion Miami, as well as SEC and Sugar Bowl champion LSU. Both the ĪCanes and Tigers finished the season in the top 10 while Syracuse, Boston College and Marshall all finished in the top 25 of at least one of the major polls. Virginia Tech finished 18th in both the coaches and AP poll.
