BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech head football coach Frank Beamer announced Monday that redshirt junior Marcus Vick (Newport News, Va.) will be the starting quarterback for when the Hokies begin preseason practice in August. Sophomore Sean Glennon (Centreville, Va.) has been tabbed the No. 2 quarterback for the start of practice.

"After evaluating the spring game, as well as our whole spring practice, we feel that it is appropriate to name Marcus the starter for our football team," Beamer said. "I think Marcus had an excellent spring. He has the ability to make some big plays and has done so throughout the spring.

"I think Sean Glennon had a great spring practice. He has worked very hard and we have a lot of confidence in his future at Virginia Tech. It's unfortunate that Cory Holt was injured, but Sean will go into the fall as the No. 2 and Cory as the No. 3. As always, evaluations will continue into preseason, but as of now, these are our plans for the fall."

Vick started spring practice as the No. 3 man on the depth chart, but worked his way up throughout the 15-practice session. He capped the spring with a 9-for-17, 107-yard performance in the spring game on April 16.

Glennon served as the No. 2 quarterback last year, playing in four games. He completed 8-of-11 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Vick missed the 2004 season while serving a season-long suspension. He played in 11 games in 2003, completing 30-of-57 passes for 475 yards with two touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed 37 times for 102 yards and caught four passes for 82 yards and a score. Holt (Lexington, N.C.) was redshirted last year and will be a redshirt freshman this season.
