- Vick becomes first player in BIG EAST history to be chosen first overall -
- Conference sets league record with six picks in round one -

Providence, R.I. - Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Vick, selected No. 1 overall by the Atlanta Falcons, led a group of 18 BIG EAST players selected in the 2001 NFL Draft. The league had six players chosen in the first round, a conference record. Joining Vick in round one were Miami's Dan Morgan (11th, Carolina Panthers), Damione Lewis (12th, St. Louis Rams), Santana Moss (16th, New York Jets) and Reggie Wayne (30th Indianapolis Colts) along with Syracuse standout Will Allen (No. 22, New York Giants). The BIG EAST's six first-round picks was second (Big Ten, 8) among conferences.

Vick is the first player in BIG EAST history to be the No. 1 pick overall. Prior to his selection, the highest conference player chosen was current Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. McNabb was picked No. 2 overall out of Syracuse in 1999. In two seasons as a Hokie, Vick threw for 3,074 yards and 20 touchdowns while rushing for 1,202 yards and 16 scores. He was 20-0 in two regular seasons as the starting quarterback.

Miami's four first-round selections were the most of any school in the nation. Leading the way for the Hurricanes was linebacker Dan Morgan. He became the first player in college football history to win the Bednarik, Butkus and Nagurski awards in the same season when he garnered the three honors a year ago.

The BIG EAST has had at least three first round picks each year since 1995 and in eight of 10 seasons since the league was formed in 1991. Eleven of the 18 players were chosen on day one, the second-best total (12 - 1999, '98) for players chosen in the first three rounds.

Miami led the BIG EAST with seven players selected. Syracuse had four players chosen, followed by Virginia Tech (3), Boston College (1), Pittsburgh (1), Rutgers (1) and Temple (1).
