Carter Named Director of Athletics at Virginia State University
Former Hokie athlete and administrator takes new position, effective July 1

Derek Carter has been named director of athletics at Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va., it was announced Tuesday.

Carter is a Virginia Tech graduate who has held several positions in the Virginia Tech Athletics Department, most recently as director of the Monogram Club. A four-year letterwinner on Tech football teams from 1981-84, Carter earned a bachelor of science in marketing education from Virginia Tech in 1985, and a master's in sports management from the University of Tennessee in 1991. He stayed at UT from 1991-94, serving as an assistant director in the office of student life.

Carter returned to Blacksburg in 1994, spending four years on the Tech staff as an assistant athletics director in the areas of administration, compliance and student life.

"I'm excited for the professional opportunity the athletics director position at Virginia State offers me and my family," Carter said. Carter and his wife Karen are expecting a baby in May.

The Monogram Club is an organization for graduated athletes who earned one or more letters in any varsity sport at Virginia Tech. Current membership includes approximately 900 former Tech athletes.

"I will continue to lend support to all of Virginia Tech athletics, especially the Monogram Club's continued growth and success," Carter said.
