Tech tailback Kevin Jones rushed for 94 yards on just five carries as the Hokies held a controlled scrimmage Wednesday afternoon on the practice fields behind the Merryman Center.

Jones supplied the only touchdown of the scrimmage, rushing up the middle for 69 yards on the first-team offense's opening possession. The touchdown came against Tech's second-team defense.

Tech's offense struggled in the cold and windy conditions in Blacksburg. Temperatures dipped into the 30s, with the wind blowing between 15-20 mph. As a result, Tech's passing game struggled, though quarterback Grant Noel completed 7-of-12 for 56 yards. Back-up Bryan Randall completed 3-of-8 for 23 yards. Ernest Wilford caught two passes for 25 yards, while Shawn Witten caught two for 15.

"I thought there was some good things on both sides," Tech head coach Frank Beamer said. "We popped a couple of nice runs and we blocked well for the most part. We made some nice throws too.

"We improved since our last scrimmage. But we had too many penalties and we dropped some passes. There's still a lot of work to be done."

Most of Tech's penalties came on false starts as the Hokies jumped off at least five times. Tech also dropped three or four passes, but a lot of that goes back to the cold, windy conditions.

On defense, Garnell Wilds, Jim Davis, Jason Lallis, Ronyell Whitaker and Mike Daniels finished with four tackles each. Kevin Lewis, Billy Hardee, Lamar Cobb and Blake Warren each had a sack.

Tech practices again this Friday and will have another scrimmage this Saturday.

"We've got the majority of our stuff in now," Beamer said. "We just need to keep working on it. We've got some guys thinking too much right now, but that should improve."

Tech's spring game is April 20th at Lane Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
