Strong Defense Headlines Scrimmage
Johnson catches long touchdown pass
April 4, 2001

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Strong defense and a pair of big offensive plays highlighted Virginia Tech's first limited scrimmage in spring practice Wednesday afternoon at the Moseley Practice Field.

The lone offensive touchdown of the afternoon was scored on the sixth series of the scrimmage, as redshirt freshman wide receiver Richard Johnson hauled in an 89-yard touchdown pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Jason Davis. Tech's other big offensive play of the afternoon came on the first play of the scrimmage, as redshirt junior tailback Lee Suggs broke a 39-yard run down the left side.

There were many highlights for the defensive unit, including redshirt junior cornerback Ronyell Whitaker's 15-yard return of redshirt junior quarterback Grant Noel's pass for a touchdown. Top tackler for the Hokies was sophomore defensive tackle Kevin Lewis, who recorded five tackles, including two for a total of four-yards lost and a five-yard sack.

"I thought the defense had a very strong scrimmage today," Tech head coach Frank Beamer said. "We just put the offense in and when you get the defense moving around and stunting quite a bit, this will probably be the most confusing day for the offense."

The defense recorded a total of eight sacks and another 10 tackles for loss in the scrimmage. Redshirt junior linebacker T.J. Jackson, redshirt junior defensive end Lamar Cobb and redshirt sophomore defensive end Cols Colas all recovered fumbles in the defensive effort.

On offense, Suggs gained 46 yards on just two carries and Noel and Davis combined for six-of-19 passing for 128 yards and one interception. Redshirt sophomore fullback Marvin Urquhart had a nine-yard run and caught one pass for six yards.

"We have a ways to go, offensively, with our blocking and execution," Beamer concluded. "The effort was good again and that's the key thing for us right now is to have great effort each and every time we step on the field."

The Hokies will conduct another scrimmage on Saturday, April 7, at 1 p.m. and will conclude spring drills on Saturday, April 21, with the annual maroon-white game in Lane Stadium/Worsham Field.
