Clowney Scores Two Touchdowns in Second Scrimmage
Offense scores five touchdowns on the day
April 9, 2005

Wideout David Clowney caught two touchdown passes, one from Marcus Vick and one from Sean Glennon, in the Hokies second spring scrimmage Saturday at Lane Stadium.

"I really think our intensity is continuing to improve," said head coach Frank Beamer. "Still, our execution needs to get better, but we did some good things today. We had bright spots on both sides of the ball which is what you are looking for."

Clowney finished with three grabs for 48 yards and scored on a practice-long of 37 yards from Glennon. He also hauled in an 8-yard pass from Vick during red-zone work early in the practice.

"This is a great style of practice," said Beamer. "For the first part we worked the red-zone, from the 20 to 25 yard-line in, and then we played two quarters. We are challenging our kids to get the job down."

Vick led both quarterbacks that played on the day with 14 completions in 26 attempts for 199 yards and three touchdowns. His first touchdown of the day came when he connected with Jeff King from six yards out, to complete an eight play, 18-yard drive.

Glennon finished 9-of-21 with 122 yards and the lone score in front of a large crowd, saturated with Virginia area coaches in Blacksburg for a coaching clinic.

"We had one of largest turnouts for a high school clinic this year," said Beamer. "It was great to see such a crowd and the coaches being able to watch their kids play, it really adds to the atmosphere."

On the ground, redshirt freshman Branden Ore continued to impress, this time carrying a team-high 12 times for 61 yards, with a day-long of 29 yards, garnered from a scamper off the left side of the Hokie offensive line and aided by a crucial Clowney block downfield.

Fellow redshirt freshman George Bell rushed five time for 18 yards, Mike Imoh carried seven times for 12 yards and a score and Cedric Humes added nine yards on six attempts.

For the receiving corps, both King and Josh Morgan totaled four grabs each, totaling 33 and 66 yards, respectively. Josh Hyman added 32 yards on two grabs and Jeremy Gilchrest grabbed two catches for 52 yards and a touchdown.

Senior D.J. Walton led the team in tackles from the secondary with seven total, while linebackers Xavier Adibi and Vince Hall each added five tackles apiece.

Corey Gordon was sharp while breaking up three passes and totaling five tackles. Chris Ellis recorded two sacks, for losses of six and five yards, three total tackles and one pass break-up, while defensive tackle Jonathan Lewis added six tackles.

Brandon Pace saw some of his first scrimmage action, hitting on 2-of-3 attempts, making good from 42 and 17 yards, but missing from 41 yards. Dustin Keys finished 1-of-2, making from 28 yards, but was blocked by Roland Minor in an attempt from 29 yards.

The Hokies return to the practice field on Monday, with the annual Maroon-White game to be held on Saturday Apr. 16 in Lane Stadium at 2 p.m.
