BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech football players Bryan Randall and Jimmy Williams have been named to preseason watch lists for the upcoming season. Randall, who was recently named to the Davey O'Brien Award Watch List, was named to the Maxwell Award Watch List Wednesday, while Williams has been named to the Nagurski Award Watch List.

Randall, a senior quarterback from Williamsburg, Va., is one of 41 players on the preseason list for the Maxwell Award for the College Player of the Year. This award, presented by the Maxwell Football Club, is presented in honor of Robert W. (Tiny) Maxwell, legendary college player, official and sports columnist.

For the 2003 season, Eli Manning, University of Mississippi quarterback, won the award.

Williams, a junior from Hampton, Va., is making a move to cornerback after spending his first two seasons as a free safety. He is one of 64 players on the preseason list. The award, named after Hall of Famer and University of Minnesota and Chicago Bears star Bronko Nagurski, recognizes the best all-around defensive players throughout the year with the Bronko Nagurski Player of the Week.

In November, five finalists will be selected by the FWAA All-America committee and the trophy will be presented to the winner at a banquet on Dec. 8 in Charlotte, N.C. Former Hokie Corey Moore won the award following the 1999 season.

The members of the 2004 Virginia Tech football squad report to campus on Aug. 3 and begin practice the following day. The 2004 ACC Football Media Days will take place this coming weekend in Greensboro, N.C. Randall and senior free safety Vincent Fuller will represent the Hokies at the three-day event.
