Outback Welcome Back Picnic slated for Aug. 12

All Virginia Tech alumni and fans are cordially invited to the Outback Steakhouse Welcome Back Picnic held Aug. 12 at Cassell Coliseum. The Blacksburg Hokie Club serves as the hosts of the event, with the menu being donated by the Outback Steakhouse for the fourth consecutive year. The menu features steak, chicken, Aussie fries, Caesar salad, rolls and dessert.

Festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. and conclude at 7:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased in advance. The cost is $15 per adult and $5 for children age 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased at A Cleaner World, University Travel Consultants or University Travel Vacation Center.

All proceeds from the event benefit athletic scholarships. Special guests at the event include head football coach Frank Beamer, the entire 2001 football team, and other guests from the athletic department administration. The Voice of the Hokies, Bill Roth, and his sidekick, Mike Burnop, will emcee the event. Other activities include Mike Gentry, Tech's assistant AD for athletic performance, presenting the strength and conditioning awards and an autograph session with the players.

Now here's a list of events, bus trips, happenings, etc. taking place in Hokie Club areas near you:
The VTAF Golf Tournament - The seventh annual VTAF golf tournament will be held at Auburn Hills Golf Club in Riner, Va. on Friday, Sept. 7. Entry is based on a first-come, first-serve basis, with a maximum of 100 golfers.

There will be a strict honor system on handicaps. The format is the total of two best balls low net, using full handicap. Prizes will be given for the top three teams along with the shot closest to the pin and for the longest drive.

The event starts (shotgun start) at 2 p.m. The cost is $75 per person or $300 per team. A lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, cole slaw, chips, cookies and drinks is included.

Christiansburg/Montgomery County/Floyd County - The Christiansburg/Montgomery County/Floyd County Hokie Club will be holding a picnic on Aug. 24 from 6:30-10:30 p.m. at the Round Meadow Country Club in Christiansburg. Hors d'oeuvres will be provided and the pool will be open. The cost is $6 per person (adults only) and the deadline to sign up is Aug. 21. Northern Virginia Hokie Club - The Northern Virginia Hokie Club is planning bus trips to all the home games for the 2001 season. The cost is $35 for a single game or $175 for all six home games. New Jersey Hokie Club - The New Jersey chapter of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association and Hokie Club members in that area have functions planned for Sept. 21-22, the weekend the Hokies play at Rutgers. All proceeds from these functions got to benefit the New Jersey Scholarship Fund, which helps send New Jersey students to Virginia Tech.

Event: Hokie Headquarters
Time: 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. Registration/Welcome area near the escalators. Cocktail reception/pep rally at the top of the escalator in the pre-function area. Special guest and speaker is head coach Frank Beamer and other member of the athletics department. Cash bar and hors d'oeuvres. A $5 per person donation suggested at the door (no reservations required). 50/50's, VT goods and apparel sales (cash or checks only - no credit cards), and silent auction will be available.
Where: The Hilton 3 Tower Center Blvd, off Rt. 18, East Brunswick, New Jersey
Direction: All routes from N, S, E, or W starting from NJ Turnpike. Exit 9 of the NJ Turnpike through the toll plaza, bear right towards Route 18 North and take the first right into the complex. Go straight to the traffic light. At the traffic light, make a left onto Tower Center Boulevard - the Hilton East Brunswick is at the end of the drive.

GAMEDAY
Date: Saturday September 22
Time: 3 hours prior to kickoff (Game Time - TBA)
Events: Reception/Registration tent, pregame buffet (see details below), 50/50's, VT goods and apparel sales (cash or checks only - no credit cards), silent auction, raffles & pep rally.
Where: Tents for the event will be located on the South Lawn of the Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway.

Guest speakers to be announced. Special guest may be every HOKIES favorite mascot! Even if you do not plan on participating in the pregame tailgate buffet, parking areas are restricted and limited at Rutgers University. The RAC is surrounded with plenty of unrestricted parking and lawn area for tailgating. The south lawn area is exclusively Tech territory on gameday. Rutgers attendants charge $5 per vehicle. Free shuttle service provided by RU takes you over to the stadium. Expect to walk to the stadium entrance from this drop off point. Shuttles to the gate are available for seniors/handicap. Let the attendants on the bus know you require this service.

Direction: All routes from N, S, E, or W starting from I-287. From Route 287 (North or South), turn off at Exit 6. Head south (Washington Ave, also known as RT. 529). Follow to Metlars Lane (Rt. 609) and bear left onto Suttons Lane. Turn right onto Hospital Rd. The RAC will be on your left. Lost? Page us at 732-633-2642.

From River Road, Bound Brook, Highland Park, proceed East on River Road toward Highland Park until you reach the fifth traffic light (approximately 3.4 miles) at the intersection of River Road, Metlars Lane and Route 18. For specific campuses, follow the directions below. Turn left at the River Road traffic light onto Metlars Lane. If you are coming from Hokie headquarters at the Hilton, do not take Rt. 18 to the stadium. Directions will be available at hotel lobby.

(Deadline for Buffet sign-up is September 15, 2001. The New Jersey chapter cannot take any requests for or payments on game day for the buffet. Cost is $25 per person or $35 with a game ticket. Buffet served from up to one hour prior to kickoff. Due to the unknown kickoff, a hot, country brunch buffet will be served for a noon or 1 p.m. kickoff or a hot pasta buffet for any afternoon or evening game time.

The country brunch includes fruit juices, fresh fruit platter, ham, eggs, pancakes, potatoes, a pasta dish, pastries, breads, coffee, tea or milk. The hot pasta buffet includes chicken entree, a selection of pastas, garlic and Italian bread, vegetable, salad, desert and beverages. Beer & wine available during the buffet as a cash bar option. Mixers provided.
