BLACKSBURG, Va. - Twenty-nine freshman football players reported to the Virginia Tech campus Tuesday for three days of academic and athletic orientation, which begin on Wednesday morning.

"We are very excited to get started with this exceptionally talented class," said Tech head coach Frank Beamer. "We'll see how it works out, but I wouldn't be surprised if anywhere from eight to 12 of them end up playing this fall."

The group reporting to campus Tuesday did not include freshman defensive lineman Lamar Veney of Stuarts Draft, Va., who plans to enroll at Tech in January. Junior college defensive tackle Jimmy Williams of Memphis, Tenn., is scheduled to join the team after completing summer classes, which are expected to conclude in late August.

The remainder of the Tech squad is scheduled to report on Friday, Aug. 2. The Hokies' first full practices begin Sunday, Aug. 4. All Tech football practices and scrimmages will be closed to the public.

The Hokies are scheduled to open the 2002 season against Arkansas State in the Hispanic College Fund Football Classic at Lane Stadium/Worsham Field on Aug. 25.
