BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech receiver Shawn Witten underwent surgery Friday morning at Montgomery Regional Hospital to repair a fractured left hand suffered in practice on Wednesday.

Witten, a sophomore from Elizabethton, Tenn., is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with the injury. He was sharing the No. 2 spot on the depth chart at flanker with redshirt freshman Ernest Wilford. Returning starter André Davis holds down the top spot at the flanker position.

Last season as a freshman, Witten lettered for his play at both wide receiver positions and on special teams. He caught six passes for 55 yards.

With Witten sidelined, Richard Johnson, a true freshman from Baltimore, Md., is expected to see increased practice time.
