BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech Athletics Department announced Monday the winning slogan picked by Lee Suggs and Kevin Jones in the "Nickname the Backs" contest.

The duo chose "The Untouchables" as the moniker they will go by this year. The winning slogan, submitted by Jeremy Reynolds of Danville, Va., will be used on any publicity items used by the Tech Sports Information Office. Reynolds will win an autographed 8x10 picture of the two and will get to have his picture taken with the two following a practice.

"In the movie, those guys were 'the men'," Suggs said. "Everyone respected them and no one could mess with them. I think it's a perfect nickname for us and we're excited about it. Hopefully at the end of the year, we will have proven that it on the field and people will still think of us as untouchable."

"It's going to be tight to hear our name associated with that group," Jones said. "Those guys were respected and feared and I would hope our opponents feel the same way about Lee and myself."

Nickname the Backs was launched on July 19 and closed on Aug. 14. In that 27-day span, 4,016 possible slogans were submitted on hokiesports.com, Tech's athletic Web site.

"I submitted that name on the first day and sent an email to 17 of my friends telling them about the contest," Reynolds, a recent graduate of Tech said. "I told them it would be cool if we were sitting in the stands and the nickname they were calling them was the nickname one of us submitted."

The duo narrowed their choices down to 10 finalists and chose the winner this past weekend. Other finalists included: "Agent 227," "The Bruise Brothers," "Double Jeopardy," and "Showstoppers," among others.
