BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech freshman offensive lineman Matt Welsh is scheduled to have surgery Thursday afternoon to repair his torn right ACL and lateral meniscus, as reported by head athletic trainer Mike Goforth.

The surgery will be done at Montgomery Regional Hospital and will be performed by Dr. Joe Prudhomme.

Welsh hurt the knee in Monday's morning practice. The 6-4, 288-pounder from Clifton, Va., had been working at right guard on the line.

The Hokies will hold preseason scrimmage No. 2 Tuesday afternoon at Lane Stadium/Worsham Field. The scrimmage is closed to the public.
