Hokies to hit new Worsham Field turf
August 21, 2001

The rest of the Tech team gets to test out the new turf in Lane Stadium Tuesday afternoon as the Hokies hold their second scrimmage of the fall, starting at 3:15. So far, only the kickers and punters have practiced on the new turf and they have given glowing reports on it.

Workers from GreenTech, Inc., out of Richmond installed the ITM natural grass sports field system over the summer. The system includes a Bermuda grass surface grown on movable trays, with an air and vacuum blower system which allows for excellent drainage, and an irrigation system. The field cost $1.5 million and Tech is the only school in the nation with this type of field.

The scrimmage will last approximately two hours and is closed to the public. The list of injured players not participating include Larry Austin (hamstring), Cedric Humes (ankle), T.J. Jackson (hamstring), Emmett Johnson (quad), Richard Johnson (hamstring), Chris Shreve (hamstring), and Browning Wynn (back).
