Virginia Tech airport to close during football game
FAA issues flight restriction
September 27, 2001

The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a new temporary flight restriction (TFR) prohibiting flight below 3,000 feet above ground level within a three nautical mile radius of any "any major professional , collegiate, or high school sporting event or any other major open air assembly of people." The FAA says the National Security Council insisted on this restriction.

Accordingly, the Virginia Tech airport, which is about one mile from Lane Stadium, will be closed Saturday September 29 from 11 A.M. to 4 P.M. Game time is noon. If the TFR is still in effect for future games similar restrictions will apply.

"This will cause some minor inconvenience for the flying public, but we think pilots will understand why the FAA is doing this," said Spencer Hall, assistant vice president for facilities.

No helicopters will be allowed to land on the main campus, but can land at the airport during the open hours. Some helicopters have been allowed to land adjacent to Lane Stadium.
