Suggs' injury creates some changes
September 3, 2001

Tech head coach Frank Beamer confirmed on Monday's BIG EAST teleconference that Keith Burnell, a redshirt junior from Chesapeake, Va., will move into the No. 1 tailback position and in all likelihood will get the start Saturday against Western Michigan. Kevin Jones, the freshman from Chester, Pa., will be the back-up. Burnell rushed for 71 yards and two touchdowns Saturday against UConn, while Jones rushed for 63 yards.

Beamer said Wayne Ward will be the No. 3 tailback. Ward played fullback in Saturday's game with the Huskies, but has played some tailback in the past.

"We feel good about our backs," Beamer said. "They haven't played a lot and that's the tough part, but they've all got talent."

Beamer also said he and his staff have no plans on playing touted freshmen tailbacks Justin Hamilton and Cedric Humes, both of whom are redshirting. Tech's staff plans on giving redshirt freshman Josh Spence a few reps at tailback in case they need him. Spence played tailback in high school, but was moved to fullback at the start of fall practice.

"We've had injuries before," Beamer said. "Michael Vick was hurt last year and so was André Davis. It's a part of football. How we react will determine how good we'll be."
