Tech Athletics Department Announces Promotions

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech Athletics Department announced Monday that employees John Ballein and Randy Butt have received promotions.

Ballein has been promoted from assistant director of athletics for football operations to associate director of athletics for football operations. As associate director of athletics for football operations, Ballein is responsible for arranging travel plans for the team, recruiting, arranging camps and clinics as well as numerous other activities.

Ballein, a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, first came to Tech in 1987 as a graduate assistant coach for the football team. After leaving in 1988 to coach at Western Kentucky, he returned to Tech the following year as a recruiting coordinator. He received the promotion to assistant director of athletics for football operations in 1996.

Butt has been promoted from director of financial affairs to assistant director of athletics for financial affairs. Butt joined the Tech staff in 1986. As assistant athletic director of financial affairs, Butt is responsible for managing budgets for various offices along with overseeing all athletics department financial transactions.

Both promotions are effective immediately.
