Hokies Come From Behind In Jayvee Game
Tech downs Hargrave, 19-15

BLACKSBURG - Alex Markogiannakis's punt block and Sam Fatherly's nine-yard return of it for a touchdown turned the tide for good as the Virginia Tech jayvee team downed Hargrave Military Academy, 19-15, Friday afternoon at Lane Stadium/Worsham Field.

With the Hokies trailing, Markogiannakis came through and blocked Brad Ronk's punt. Bob Ruff picked it up before fumbling it at the 9-yard line, where Fatherly scooped it up and ran in with 7:47 left in the game.

Josh Spence led the Tech offense, rushing for 98 yards on 23 carries. Richard Johnson was the star on the Tech offense, from an unusual position - quarterback. Johnson came in with the Hokies down 15-2 and led the team down the field for a touchdown. He connected with Ron Moody on the deep ball for a 36-yard touchdown with 2:19 left in the third quarter. Johnson finished the game with four yards rushing and 41 yards passing and a TD on 2-of-3 attempts. Jason Davis was 5 for 13 passing for 19 yards.

Hargrave (2-5) led 9-2 at the half thanks to field goals of 35, 34 and 44 yards by David Blackwell. Trailing 3-0, Tech scored with 11:18 left when Fatherly came through on an attempted punt and blocked it. The ball rolled through the back of the end zone for a safety.

For Tech, Matt Felber kicked a 27-yard field goal, two extra points and averaged 43.4 on five punts with a long of 53 yards.

Hargrave increased its lead to double digits when quarterback Patrick Stetson hooked up with Darrell Mitchell for a 17-yard score. The Tigers led 15-2 before the Hokies came back to score 17-unanswered points.

Hargrave was led on offense by Derrick Bush's 19 yards rushing on four carries. Stetson was 11 of 22 passing for 157 yards and a score. Mitchell finished the game with five receptions for 79 yards and a TD.

Defensively, Tech was led by Mark Costen, who had four solo stops and two sacks. Mikal Baaqee, Markogiannakis and Fatherly each had four solo stops. Johnson had three solo stops and two tackles for loss as a cornerback.

The Tigers were led on defense by Jason Kaminski, who had six solo tackles, three assists, a fumble recovery and a TFL. Joseph Crivella finished with four solo tackles, five assists and a TFL. Brandon Young had five solo tackles.

For the game, the Hokies rushed for 101 yards and threw for 60 (161 total yards). Hargrave threw for 167 yards and rushed for 14 yards (181 total yards).

In all, Tech had two blocked punts and a blocked field goal while Hargrave had one blocked punt. This is Tech's only jayvee game as the first game with Fork Union was cancelled earlier this year.
