BLACKSBURG - Four Virginia Tech football standouts have been named to the 2002 Sporting News All-BIG EAST Conference first team. The national publication announced its league all-star teams on Friday.

Tech was represented on the team by three players on defense and one on offense. On defense, junior end Nathaniel Adibi, sophomore cornerback DeAngelo Hall and senior free safety Willie Pile were honored while senior lineman Anthony Davis made the team on offense.

Adibi recorded a career-high nine sacks and was a semifinalist for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award. Hall had four interceptions and ranks eighth in the country in punt returns, averaging 16.0 yards per return. Pile has started 37 consecutive games and recorded four interceptions and 98 tackles. He also had two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Davis saw action on 823 snaps this season and graded out at 82.6 percent for the year. He also had 38 knockdown blocks on the season, starting all 13 games at left tackle.

The University of Miami dominated the individual awards handed out by The Sporting News with nine players on the squad. Miami running back Willis McGahee was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, while Pittsburgh linebacker Gerald Hayes was selected as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year. Rich Rodriguez, who led West Virginia to a surprising second-place finish, was named the league's Coach of the Year.

Virginia Tech began exams on Friday, but preparations for Tech's Dec. 31 game against Air Force in the inaugural Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowl have already begun. The Hokies will take to the practice field on Sunday, and then again on Thursday, Dec. 19, which will also be media day. The Hokies will practice on Dec. 20 & 21 before breaking for Christmas.
