Five Earn All-BIG EAST Honors
Jones named Rookie of the Year
December 5, 2001

BLACKSBURG - Five Virginia Tech football players have been named to the All-BIG EAST Football squads, including four on the first team, as announced Wednesday by the conference office.

Ben Taylor leads a group of four on the first team. Wide receiver André Davis, defensive tackle David Pugh and cornerback Ronyell Whitaker were also selected to the squad, which is voted on by each of the eight head coaches in the league.

The lone Hokie to make the second team was defensive tackle Chad Beasley, who was a second-team all-conference selection a year ago. He had 57 tackles, four TFL and two sacks.

Taylor led the team in tackles with 121, 4.5 sacks and 18 tackles for loss. The senior from Bellaire, Ohio, is a repeat performer on the first team. Davis, who made the team as a punt returner a year ago, makes the move to the first team as a receiver. The senior had 39 catches for 623 yards and seven touchdowns. Pugh is also a repeat selection to the first team and had 50 tackles, 3.5 sacks and 14 tackles for loss.

The BIG EAST's Rookie of the Year Award went to Tech's Kevin Jones, who rushed for 957 yards and five touchdowns while starting just three games.

The Hokies, who are preparing for a Jan. 1 battle with Florida State at the Gator Bowl, will resume practice on Dec. 16 for three practices before breaking for Christmas. All players and coaches will report to Jacksonville on Dec. 26.
