MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - During the last week of summer, the Virginia Tech spirit teams attended the National Cheerleaders Association/National Dance Association Camp from Aug.14-17.

With over 800 cheerleaders and dancers at the camp, the Hokie squads competed well, showing their hard work paid off.

The cheerleaders won first place in game day competition for the entire camp. The competition combined both cheer and sideline routines.

In addition to the first-place finish, the team also won third place for Division 1-A in the spirit routine. The team has received a bid to the NCA Nationals and was awarded the NCA Spirit Stick.

Two Hokies, Anne Moore and Melissa Lee, were named All-America at the camp, while Dana Felder received an application to be a part of the NCA next summer.

The HighTechs also had a great showing at the camp. The squad finished third in Division 1-A for the team dance competition. They received a bid to the NDA Nationals as well as garnering the NDA Spirit Stick.

Christi Weems won the top gun leaps and turns award, which is an individual award for the entire camp.

Just like the cheerleaders, two HighTechs, Christi Weems and Jenny Rhudy-Nakamura, were named All-America for their performances.

Morgan Gabor, Dawn Hollbrook, Chelsea Poling, Megan Puckett and Jenny Rhudy-Nakamura received applications to work for the NDA next summer.

Tech also received the program award. The award is given yearly to an entire spirit program that has shown improvement in skills, has earned the respect from the university, implemented changes to increase crowd support at athletic events and displayed a positive image of what collegiate spirit leaders should strive for at their university and in the community.

The first home sporting event that features both squads will be the football game against Ohio on Sept. 17 at 3:30 p.m.
