Hokies' JV edges Hargrave, 17-16
Dunlevy hits 51-yard game-winner for Tech
October 28, 2005

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Jud Dunlevy's 51-yard field goal with no time left on the clock gave the Virginia Tech junior varsity football team a dramatic 17-16 triumph over Hargrave Military Academy Friday afternoon at Lane Stadium.

Dunlevy's kick, which was set up by an encroachment penalty on the defense the play before, split the uprights from the near hash-mark, 51-yards away. The Roanoke Rapids, N.C., native redeemed himself after missing a potential go-ahead kick from 52 yards away just three minutes earlier.

Following Dunlevy's missed kick, Hargrave took over and ran three plays to the right side, losing yards on each play. After an 11-yard punt, the Hokies had four seconds to erase a 16-14 deficit. Quarterback Grant Throckmorton's (Wytheville, Va.) pass to the end zone fell incomplete, but the Tigers were flagged for jumping offside, setting the stage for Dunlevy's heroics.

Throckmorton performed some heroics of his own, leading the Hokies back from a 13-7 halftime deficit. The redshirt-sophomore completed 14-of-21 passes for 226 yards and a touchdown. After throwing an initial incompletion to open the second half, Throckmorton hit on his next nine passes, including a 52-yard touchdown bomb to receiver Jeremy Gilchrist (Virginia Beach, Va.) to give Tech a 14-13 lead in the third quarter.

Gillchrist was easily Tech's leading receiver, grabbing five passes for 108 yards and the score.

The Hokies took an early lead after Stevie Ray Lloyd (Lynchburg, Va.) forced a fumble and Chad Grimm (Fairfax, Va.) recovered at the Hargrave 29. The turnover set up Billy Gorham's (Francoa, Va.) 1-yard plunge to give Tech a 7-0 lead. Gorham led Tech on the ground with 32 yards on 12 carries.

The Tigers answered behind the running of Keiland Williams. The tailback gained 94 yards on 16 carries in the game, including runs of 15 and 11 yards on Hargrave's first touchdown drive. Williams capped the drive with an 8-yard run to tie the game.

After forcing a three-and-out on the next series, the visitors took the lead when Khalil Conteh blocked a punt at the Tech 17 and Darrius Massenburg returned it for a touchdown. Hargrave missed the extra point.

Hargrave, which entered the game at 7-2, used a two-quarterback rotation. Jarrett Dunston and Tim Jones alternated series on offense, combining to go 9-for-14 for 141 yards.

Tight end Cody Slate was Hargrave's leading receiver, hauling in four passes for 98 yards, including a 61-yard reception, which preceded Merf Trout's go-ahead field goal midway through the fourth quarter.

Jake Patton (Chantilly, Va.) was Tech's leading tackler with 11 total tackles, including one-half sack and 1.5 tackles for a loss.

The Hokies' next junior varsity game is scheduled for Thurs., Nov. 10, against Fork Union at 1 p.m., at Lane Stadium.
