Hokies Hold First Spring Scrimmage
Defense leads the way
April 1, 2006

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The defense put on a strong showing as the Virginia Tech football team held its first scrimmage of the spring season Saturday afternoon at Lane Stadium.

The Hokie defense totaled 13 sacks. Leading the strong effort was redshirt-freshman Mark Muncey (Tazewell, Va.) with eight tackles, including one for a loss. Redshirt-freshman William Wall (Washington, D.C) also had a good showing with six tackles and one sack.

Redshirt-junior Vince Hall (Chesapeake, Va.) added a sack and six tackles of his own.

Corey Gordon (Gainesville, Fla.), recovered the scrimmage's only fumble, while redshirt-sophomore Jonas Houseright (Gate City, Va.) had the only interception.

"It's about where you expect it to be," head coach Frank Beamer said. "The defense is ahead of the offense from a maturity standpoint and you really see that out there. It's moving a little to fast for some of our offensive guys. Then we don't slow our defenses down either. We let them run their stuff."

Cory Holt (Lexington, N.C.) finished the day with six completions in 12 attempts for 46 yards passing and one interception. Sean Glennon (Centreville, Va.) threw for 44 yards as he completed 7-of-11 attempts.

The offense provided 182 rushing yards in the controlled scrimmage. Freshman Kenny Lewis (Danville, Va.) led the way with 68 yards on 14 rushing attempts, including a 42-yard gain on the day's longest run. Victor Harris (Highland Springs, Va.) totaled 47 yards on 10 attempts. Harris' longest run was a 21-yard pickup.

"In the end, it's just moving too fast for some of our offensive guys, but I like our effort and we just have to keep working," Beamer said. "We feel like when we get near the end and get our personnel narrowed down, things will look a lot better."

The team returns to the field Monday for a closed practice.
