Will Furrer To Be Honored By Fork Union
Former Tech QB to enter FUMA Sports Hall of Fame
June 13, 2006 Fork Union, VA - Will Furrer, a record-holding quarterback at Virginia Tech, will be inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame at Fork Union Military Academy on Thursday, June 15, 2006. Furrer holds a number of individual records at Virginia Tech, including most pass completions with 494. His 5,915 total yards and 43 touchdowns ranks him among the top career passing leaders of all time at Tech. Furrer attended Fork Union Military Academy as a postgraduate student, following a stellar high school career at Pullman High School in the state of Washington. Although he rotated at the quarterback position with two other players during his year at FUMA, Furrer caught the eye of Tech coaches during FUMA's annual game against Tech's JV team when he completed 9 of 16 passes for 139 yards. Recruited by Virginia Tech, Furrer proved the coaches' assessment to be the right one as he became a top scholar/athlete, and was named one of eight national recipients of the prestigious National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete Award in 1991. Drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1992, Furrer played quarterback in the NFL for seven years, including stints with the Denver Broncos, Houston Oilers and St. Louis Rams. Former NFL Coach Jerry Rhome will be on hand to present the award at the Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony. A number of players on Virginia Tech's roster each year come from Fork Union Military Academy, including current players Josh Morgan, Josh Hyman, Ryan Shuman and Devin Perez. Former Tech players from FUMA include Furrer, Ernest Wilford, Jimmy Martin, Al Clark, Jon Shields, Jim Druckenmiller, Chris Malone and many more. A number of these players are expected to attend the Sports Hall of Fame Banquet for Furrer's induction.
