June 27, 2006

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech Athletics Department announced Tuesday that Tim East has been promoted from within the department to the position of associate athletics director for external affairs.

East, who joined the Tech staff as director of promotions in 1994, will replace David Chambers. Chambers left earlier this month to become executive associate athletics director at the University of Central Florida.

During his 12 years on the Tech staff, East has overseen all marketing and promotional aspects for the Hokies' 21 varsity sports. His title changed to director of marketing and promotions in 1995, and a year later, he was named assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions, the title he has held the past 10 years.

East came to Tech after holding the position of marketing manager for VP International, publisher of Golf Illustrated magazine, for three years (1991-94). Prior to that, East was associate athletic development and marketing director at Long Beach State from 1988-91 and assistant director of marketing and promotions at the University of Miami (1986-88).

East is a 1985 graduate of Florida State University and holds a master's from St. Thomas University.
