  • Tech has welcomed a new coach to the staff in Kevin Sherman, who came from Wake Forest to coach the receivers.

  • At tight end, Tech must replace All-ACC performer Jeff King, along with John Kinzer, who has "retired" due to a neck injury.

The Players
Eddie Royal - Had a great spring ... Has gotten better at running routes and getting more consistent ... Coaches like his attitude in the weight room ... A fast player ... Coaches are hoping he will continue to raise the level of his play.

David Clowney - The lone senior receiver ... Had a good spring ... Has good speed and has proven he has the ability to make big plays ... Runs well ... Needs to work on his consistency on all levels.

Split End
Josh Morgan - A strong, physical player ... Has great hands and the ability to have monster games ... Runs good routes ... Needs to be more conscious of doing the little things well.

Josh Hyman - Was having a great spring until a shoulder injury sidelined him ... Has a great work ethic ... A guy who can make the tough catch ... Coaches are expecting great things from him this fall.

Justin Harper - From a physical standpoint, he has made the biggest strides ... With his height and size, he could raise the whole unit's ability ... Has to become consistent every play.

Tight End
Sam Wheeler - A good athlete who catches the ball well ... Has a great upside and potential ... Is gaining strength in the weight room and has the ability to help the offense.

Ed Wang - Has a lot of size and ability ... Still has a way to go in understanding the offense ... Needs to get stronger.

Greg Boone - A player who the coaches want to get on the field ... Can still go back to quarterback if needed ... Is already big enough and strong enough to play the position.

Coach Sherman ...
On the Wide Receivers
"We have a very talented group and they all work hard. They each bring something different to the table, but I think their best games are still ahead of them. We have to make sure they continue to work hard so we can play well and be consistent in the fall. They've been in the big games and they know what to expect so we have high expectations for them."

On his Newcomers
"We have five guys who are very experienced and have paid their dues. I think we can make it through the season with them. But if any injury pops up, we'd take a look at one of the young guys."

Coach Stinespring ...
On the Tight Ends
"I like the individuals. The one process we don't have in our favor is experience. The only way you're going to get it is getting on the field and playing. And there's some trial and error in that while you get your experience. We've got to make sure we're putting them in a position so that we're not out there having a lot of mental mistakes. The only factor that we have to include in the equation is time."

On his Newcomers
"I think there are two variables that you look at: are they physically and mentally ready and then is there a need? In both of these situations, I think the answer is yes, already, so we're going to work hard to get them on the field."
