Late heroics rescue Hokies in jayvee game
Tech squeaks out 7-3 win
October 6, 2006

BLACKSBURG - Chad Grimm's blocked punt with less than three minutes left in the game set up Kenny Lewis, Jr.'s 1-yard run with 1:07 left to lift the Virginia Tech football program‚s jayvee squad to a 7-3 win over Hargrave Friday afternoon at Lane Stadium/Worsham Field in the jayvee team's final game of the season.

Controversy ensued after that, overshadowing Lewis' big day. The freshman rushed 31 times for 161 yards, including the game-winner.

After Lewis' score, the Tigers appeared to take the lead with 30 seconds left on a 68-yard touchdown pass, but a penalty was called for an illegal man downfield, negating the play. The Tigers then proceeded to get two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and an illegal substitution to back them up to the 10-yard line. Grimm then intercepted a long pass on the final play to end the game.

Hargrave (5-2) marched down the field on the opening drive, but had to settle for a 32-yard field goal from Kyle Hughes. That would be all the scoring in the first quarter as the rain moved in, making conditions rough.

Early in the second quarter, the Tigers drove to Tech's 9-yard line before Demetrius Taylor intercepted an Andrew Calantone pass to stop the drive. Matt Reidy stopped another drive late in the half on a spectacular leaping interception of Jamie Childers' pass. Grimm intercepted a pass on the final play of the first half to send the teams into the locker room.

After a scoreless third quarter, neither team could mount any significant drive in the fourth until Tech drove to the Hargrave 22-yard line midway through the quarter. A sack backed the Hokies up, forcing a 45-yard field goal attempt by Jud Dunlevy that clanked off the right upright.

For the game, Grimm had a tackle, two interceptions and a blocked punt. Reidy had seven tackles, two pass break-ups and an interception. Taylor had six tackles, including two for loss, and an interception. Mark Muncey had six tackles for the Hokies.

For Hargrave, Randell Bell had 11 carries for 75 yards. Chris Slaughter had four receptions for 94 yards and had the 68-yarder called back. Defensively, Russ Wantowski had eight tackles, including two for loss and a sack, while Cater Sharpe also had eight stops. Clifton Geathers had 1.5 sacks. Ladi Ajiboye had two tackles.

Tech (2-0) is finished with its jayvee schedule.
