BLACKSBURG - George Bell, a backup tailback for the Virginia Tech football team, has requested and has been granted his release and will transfer to Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C., as announced Tuesday by the Tech football office.

The Fayetteville, N.C., is a rising redshirt junior and would have been battling for carries behind starter Branden Ore. Bell informed head coach Frank Beamer and the Virginia Tech coaching staff of his intentions, citing a desire to search for extended playing time.

Bell has battled injuries throughout his time at Tech, playing in just four games last season. Bell scored two touchdowns in 2007 while recording 107 yards on 35 carries.

Also announcing his intentions to transfer was recent Tech enrollee Brandon Barden. The Lincolnton, Ga., native worked as a wide receiver during spring practice after graduating from high school early and enrolling at Tech in January.
