Beamer announces depth chart changes
Whitaker to make the move full-time to wide receiver
August 21, 2007

BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech head football coach Frank Beamer announced Tuesday after his daily staff meeting the following significant depth chart changes:

  • True freshman Tyrod Taylor has moved to the No. 2 spot on the depth chart at quarterback.
  • Redshirt sophomore Ike Whitaker will make the move from quarterback to wide receiver full time.

"We think Ike can help this football team as a wide receiver and then he will determine if he'll go back to quarterback after this season," Beamer said. "We've been impressed with Tyrod. We want to get him the second-team work in practice and make a decision later on whether to redshirt him or try to play him."

Taylor, from Hampton, Va., was rated the No. 1 dual threat quarterback in the country last year as a senior in high school by rivals.com. Whitaker made the move to receiver part time early in preseason camp. He caught two passes in the first two scrimmages for 9 yards.

Sean Glennon remains as the No. 1 quarterback and Cory Holt will still serve as the No. 3 quarterback. Whitaker will at the split end position.
