Trip to Nebraska highlights Tech's non-conference slate

    The Schedule 2008 Football Schedule
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference released its 2008 football schedule Friday, with defending champion Virginia Tech's 12-game slate featuring one of the toughest road stretches of Frank Beamer's tenure as head coach of the Hokies. Tech is also scheduled for two appearances on ESPN's Thursday night broadcast for the fifth straight season.

The Hokies are slated to open their 2008 season on Aug. 30 with a neutral site game against East Carolina at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. It will mark the first time Virginia Tech has played a football game in Charlotte since the 1900 season when the Hokies met Clemson there on a neutral field.

Tech will follow the ECU game with back-to-back games at Lane Stadium/Worsham Field against Furman (Sept. 6) and Georgia Tech (Sept. 13) before facing a demanding seven-game stretch in which it plays five games on the road. That stint will begin with games at North Carolina (Sept. 20) and Nebraska (Sept. 27), followed by a home game against Western Kentucky (Oct. 4). After an open weekend (Oct. 11), the Hokies travel to Boston College (Oct. 18) and Florida State (Oct. 25). Consecutive Thursday night games against Maryland (Nov. 6) in Blacksburg and at Miami (Nov. 13) conclude the stint.

The Hokies are scheduled to close the regular season, and their six-game home slate, with ACC games against Duke (Nov. 22) and Virginia (Nov. 29).

New on the schedule this year are Furman, Nebraska and Western Kentucky. Tech and Furman last met in 1947, while the Hokies and Cornhuskers last met in the 1996 Orange Bowl. This will be the first meeting between Tech and the Hilltoppers, who are transitioning to FBS status.

Six of the 12 teams on Tech's schedule played in bowls last year: East Carolina (Hawaii), Georgia Tech (Humanitarian), Boston College (Champs Sports), Florida State (Music City), Maryland (Emerald) and Virginia (Gator).

Once again this season, the league is broken into two separate divisions - the Atlantic (Maryland, Clemson, NC State, Wake Forest, Boston College and Florida State) and Coastal (Virginia, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Duke, Miami and Virginia Tech) - with the two division winners meeting on Dec. 6 in the ACC Championship game at Tampa, Fla.

Times for most games will be made available, as the season gets closer.
